I Still Believe

This Series will focus on the Bible - on Holy Scripture and passages I like - on characters in the Old Testament that I admire - on New Testament lessons that I am still learning - on the great things from the Best Book Ever!

Sometimes I like being honest, even if I know it makes me look bad… so here is some honesty. I am writing this blog the night before I am posting it. I had a blog topic in mind, and I even started writing it, but I was having trouble making my thoughts flow. So I took a break, and then today (the day I’m writing this), an idea came to me.

If you follow my instagram page (@i.am.worthy.catholic.blog), then you know that I’ve had a few difficult weeks. I’ve been praying, and trying to draw closer to God. Some days it’s easy, other days it’s really hard. But one of the things that I like the most is reading passages from Holy Scripture.

I love Blessed is She, and I read two different articles recently that spoke about Scripture for different times in our lives. I’m not going to go into detail about the Scripture passages that I’ve chosen, but I want to make little lists of scripture passages that have helped me, and might help you too, with everything that is going on with COVID-19, or with more personal things.

When I feel hopeless:

  • Hebrews 11:1 / / “Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen.”

  • Jeremiah 29:11 / / “For surely I know the plans I have for you, says the Lord, plans for your welfare and not for harm, to give you a future of hope.”

  • Romans 8:24-25 / / “For in hope we are saved. Now hope that is seen is not hope. For who hopes for what is seen? But if we hope for what we do not see, we wait for it with patience.”

When I feel sad or worried:

  • Psalm 51:12 / / “Restore to me the joy of your salvation, and grant me a willing spirit, to sustain me.”

  • Psalm 118:24 / / “The Lord has done it this very day; let us rejoice today and be glad.”

  • 1 Peter 5:7 / / “Cast all your anxiety on Him because He cares for you.”

When I don’t feel God’s presence:

  • Isaiah 49:15-16 / / “Can a woman forget her nursing child, or show no compassion for the child of her womb? Even these may forget you, I will not forget you. See, I have inscribed you on the palm of My hands; your walls are continually before me.”

  • Colossians 3:6 / / “Let the message of Christ dwell among you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom through psalms, hymns, and song from the Spirit, singing to God with gratitude in your hearts.”

  • Hosea 6:3 / / “Let us acknowledge the Lord; let us press on to acknowledge Him. As surely as the sun rises, He will appear; He will come to us like the winter rains, like the sporing rains that water the earth.”

When I need help to trust:

  • Proverbs 3:5-6 / / “Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to Him, and He will make your paths straight.”

  • Psalm 28:7 / / “The Lord is my strength and my shield; my heart trusts in Him, and He helps me. My heart leaps for joy, and with my song I praise Him.”

  • 2 Corinthians 12:9 / / “But He said to me, ‘My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.’ Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me.”

I do want to mention one of the things I was going to include in my previous blog post idea. It’s been on my heart for a while, and I want to share it with you.

Have you heard the song, “I Still Believe” by Jeremy Camp?? If you have not, I highly recommend that you do. Either the 2002 or 2020 version. Or both! Listen to both. With everything that is going on, both personally and globally, I have been listening to this song about a dozen times a day.

The story behind the song is this (if you want to see the movie, this may contain spoilers… I don’t know for sure, because I haven’t seen the movie… I just know the story). Before Jeremy Camp got married to his wife, they found out that she had cancer. They got married, and she died a while after. He wrote this song as a way to remind himself that God is always there. No matter what happens, Jeremy still believes in Christ.

There are two lines that I love love love in this song.

“In brokenness I can see that this was Your will for me.”

“Even when I don’t see, I still believe.”

I think I can speak for most of us when I say that these words hit home. These words are powerful, especially with all the chaos that seems to be going on right now. We need to repeat these phrases to ourselves daily in the midst of what we are going through.

Even when I don’t see the end of the tunnel, I still believe.

Even when I can’t think of anything exciting to do while self-isolating, I still believe.

Even when I am getting frustrated at my husband, my wife, my children, my roommates, my family, myself during all of this, I still believe.

Even when I don’t see how any of this is going to work out, I still believe.

I still believe!

We need to still believe!

I am praying for each of you, and I hope that you can pray for me as well!
